Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi (1841-1910). Painter of Greek origin from the Crimea

1891-1895. Touring the Russian Empire. Return to Athens via Constantinople

A deferred invitation from the Tsar

“One more story, just one more and then my history’s completed,

all my chronicles written down and my sinner’s debt repaid to God.”

Aleksandr Sergeevich Pushkin

For Coutalianos’s tours in Russia, the most reliable source is the interview of his son Ellin in “Patris” (1933) newspaper. When Coutalianos was in Russia, the Greek, according to some calculations, must have been only 6 years old, but the content of his interview must be a transfer of his father’s stories to him. One of the most interesting incidents of that time was the invitation extended by the Tsar himself to Coutalianos, for the athlete to go to the imperial palace for a demonstration. However, this invitation was canceled almost immediately, because Grand Duchess Alexandra Georgievna of Russia (1870-1891) who had been crowned Princess of Greece and Denmark died on September 24, 1891 at the age of 21.
Despite the tragedy of the event and the misfortune of Panagis, this fact in itself makes our information reliable and we are sure that at least on the date of the princess’s death, Coutalianos was in Russian territory.

The above article is entitled “the death of the little queen”. This death canceled the performance that Coutalianos would have given in front of the family of the Tsars.
July 26. 1891. The newspaper “Philippoupolis” republishes an extensive report of the Athenian newspaper “Nea Efimeris” in which details of the funeral of the Russian princess are described. Coutalianos was very unlucky, because if he had been given the opportunity to appear before the Tsars, his fate might have changed for the better.

Coutalianos returned to Piraeus, coming from Constantinople. The author of the article mentions the adventures that the athlete faced during his tour in Russia. Specifically, he mentions that during his stay in the city of Rostov someone tried to murder him by poisoning him. Subsequently, when he arrived in the city of Trapezounda (today Trabzon), the Turkish police not only did not allow him to give performances in that city, but also confiscated his personal belongings, his cannons and the rest of his gymnastic equipment. Coutalianos seems to be saying that he intends to sell 2 or 3 houses he owns, in order to save money with which he will be able to buy new gym equipment and cannons. If he does not succeed in this, he is thinking of retiring from athletic activity, opening a shop to sell his wines that come from the vineyards he has on his island of Coutali. He states that he produces very good quality Samiotiko wine.
