Asmodeus is a biblical and demonological figure, known primarily as the “demon of lust” in the Book of Tobit. He is considered one of the four princes of Hell, a king of demons with roots in Zoroastrianism and Jewish tradition. The term also refers to an old Greek satirical newspaper (1875-1885), which was a prominent weekly satirical and cartoonist newspaper published in Athens between 1875 and 1885. It was founded by the writer Emmanuel Rhoides and the cartoonist Themos Anninos, causticizing the political and social current events of the time with caustic humor. In this unit we will identify the references that this newspaper makes to the protagonist of our story, Coutalianos.
The Prime Minister of Greece, Charilaos Trikoupis, is depicted as “Coutalianos”, raising a cannon on which he writes the word “balance”, precisely because he was trying as a politician to balance the country’s economic situation.
