A show that concerns us

Itinerant wrestlers and weightlifters like Coutalianos and the weight of history they carry

"...With the wild beasts of my soul
set free I will paint one more time,
upon you with a black seashell the secrets of eternity."
                                                  Sakellaris Kabouris

At the Athens Concert Hall, there will be a performance related both to Coutalianos and to the itinerant wrestlers who followed in the footsteps of his fame. Τhe Rafi Musical Theater Group returns to the Athens Concert Hall presenting an exciting musical and artistic cantata in collaboration with the Oros Ensemble, the composer Apostolis Koutsoyiannis, the poet Marios Hatziprokopiou and the visual artist Petros Touloudis. The show will take place on June 14 and 15, 2024. For more information on the following link.

We attended the show and we really liked it. The director had placed a large spoon in the middle of the scene, which metaphorically refers to the island of Koutali (because Coutalis -the name of the island from which Coutalianos came- means “spoon” in Greek). Next to it are some pallets, as well as a construction of chains and floating weights. To our readers, we present the following photos as well as a small excerpt from the libretto we watched.

Our entry ticket.
“Coutalis” is the name of the island where Panagis Koutalianos came from. This small island in the Sea of Marmara, was named so because when one sees it from the opposite island of Afisia (today’s Avsa), it looks like an inverted spoon. The name of the island “Coutalis”, came from the word “spoon” which in Greek is called “Coutali” (κουτάλι). (photo: https://www.ekinlikadasi.com/)

A large spoon was placed in the center of the scene, which metaphorically refers to the name of the island “Coutalis”. The various weights hanging from their chains are associated with the feats of the old Greek wrestlers and especially Coutalianos.
